Afsaneh Alavi (USA)
Chair
Dr. Alavi is a dermatologist at Mayo clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Dr. Alavi completed her residency in dermatology, a 2-year fellowship in Wound Healing and a Master’s of Science in Community Health at the University of Toronto.Her wound care journey started from IIWCC course in Toronto in 2004-2005. She served as the Director of the Wound Healing Fellowship at University of Toronto 2014-2020 and was running a sub-specialty HS and PG clinic in Toronto. She is currently a senior consultant and the medical director of clinical trial unit at department of dermatology at Mayo clinic in Rochester , Minnesota, United states . Her research interests include wound healing with focus on inflammatory wounds such as hidradenitis suppurativa, and pyoderma gangrenosum. Dr. Alavi has received multiple awards including the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Canadian Dermatology Association in 2017, and the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Award for HSF foundation in recognition of her work in HS (2019). She has been Principle Investigator on more than 50 clinical trials and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.

Safa Al Mustafa (UAE)

Dr. Safa Al Mustafa, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), RN, Bachelor in Nursing from Southern Queensland university/ Australia, Master degree in Health Care Management Marymount University/USA, Doctor Business Administration Abu Dhabi University/UAE and an active ENA member Dr. Safa has a total of 26 years of experience in the field of Nursing, and brings more than 22 years of progressive Nursing leadership experience to her position. She is responsible for developing the framework for the provision of safe, high quality, professional Nursing and Allied Health programs and practices that encourage outstanding customer service, employee engagement, improved quality outcomes, financial accountability and growth of services. She assumed the role of CNO in September 2014 as the FIRST Emirati national who took the position as a Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer at SKMC, one of the largest tertiary healthcare facility in the UAE. She is the Executive sponsor of SEHA Emirati Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Committee and Abu Dhabi Nursing Committee, a member of National Nursing Now Committee, one of the founder of SEHA IHSAN Award (the first Award at SEHA and UAE for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health), IHSAN Steering Committee chair and SINMAC 2019 Scientific Committee chair, Throughout Dr. Safa’s career, she has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Nursing Leadership Award from Cleveland Clinic-Ohio in 2016. Robert S. Kirsner (USA)

Dr. Kirsner is Chairman and the endowed Harvey Blank Professor in the Dr. Phillip Frost Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is Chief of Dermatology at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics and Jackson Memorial Hospital and directs the University of Miami Hospital Wound Center. Dr. Kirsner received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, his medical degree from the University of Miami and a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Miami, after he completed his clinical training. His clinical training included internal medicine, a clinical and research fellowship in wound healing and dermatology at the University of Miami. His research interests include Wound Healing and Skin Cancer Epidemiology. Dr. Kirsner serves on the editorial boards for a number of journals in dermatology and wound healing and serves in national leadership positions in both Wound Healing and Dermatology, including currently serving on the American Academy of Dermatology Board of Directors and the Wound Healing Society Board of Directors. In addition to career development awards, foundation, industry sponsored funding and CDC funding, he currently leads or is part of a number of NIH funded grants. Independent of books, book chapters and abstracts, he has published over 550 articles.

Helen Yifter (Ethiopia)

Dr. Helen Yifter Bitew is an Assistant Professor of Medicine working at Addis Ababa University, College Health Sciences as an Internist and Endocrinologist since 2011. Since September 2017, Dr Helen is working as Director for Academic affairs of the College of Health Sciences at Addis Ababa University.
She completed the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course in 2014, and is the lead person in the establishment of foot care services at the Diabetes center at Tikur Anbessa Hospital with the support of University of Toronto.
She is Board member of the Ethiopian Diabetes Association and Ex-Executive member of the Ethiopian Medical association and Ex-executive member of the Ethiopian society of Internal Medicine.

R. Gary Sibbald (Canada)

Dr Sibbald is a dermatologist and internist with a special interest in wound care and education. He is a professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto and an international wound care key opinion leader (educator, clinician and clinical researcher).
Dr Sibbald is co-founder of the Canadian Association of Wound Care (1995), chairperson (1995-2000) and was the former Director of the Wound Healing Clinic, Women’s College Hospital (1994-2009). He is also a previous president of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (2008 – 2012). In 1999 he co-developed the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course and has been the director for 40 courses worldwide.
Professor Sibbald received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal in 2013 and Honorary Doctor of Science from Excelsior College in 2014. Investigator, Institute for Better Health at Trillium Health Partners.
Currently he is the project ECHO lead (2018) for Ontario Skin and Wound to develop interprofessional teams for all 14 Ontario Local Integrated Health Networks.
He has over 200 publications and is co-editor and chapter author of the Chronic Wound Care 5 textbook. Currently he is the Co-editor in chief of Advances in Skin & Wound Care.

Salvacion Cruz (UAE)

Salvacion Cruz is currently working as a Wound Care Nurse at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City since 2005. She is past Vice President of Filipino Nurses Association in the Emirates (FNAE). She is the Facilitator of the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course (IIWCC) Abu Dhabi from 2012 up to present. She is a member of International Interprofessional Wound care Group (IIWCG). She is a member of the SEHA Wound Care Advisory Group. She presented as speaker from several wound care conferences, symposiums, in-services and education training. She was co-author some published articles in Wounds International and WCET. She completed her masters for Clinical Skin Integrity and Wound Management at University of Hertfordshire in UK. In 2009, Salvacion has completed the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course from University of Toronto-KSA. She received the Best Clinical Nurse Award from the Executive Nursing leadership for Outpatient Department, Medical Area and for Wound Care. She has been active member and secretary of the Shared Governance in the Outpatient Department from 2006 to June 2010. Salvacion has completed her BS Nursing Degree from University of the City of Manila (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila) in April 2001 where she received an award of excellence for community nursing. She obtained her license from the Philippine Regulatory Board as Registered Nurse in June 2001. She has worked in Medical-Surgical ward and Emergency Department at the Lung Center of the Philippines.

Hiske Smart (Bahrain)

Hiske Smart is a clinical nurse specialist working in the Kingdom of Bahrain at the King Hamad University Hospital. She is responsible for hospital wide skin injury prevention and managing the ambulatory Wound care and Hyperbaric oxygen therapy unit. She completed her nursing studies in South Africa to Master’s degree level, where after she specialized in advanced wound care with a Postgraduate Diploma in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair at the University of Cardiff (UK) in 1999 followed by the International Interprofessional Wound Care course at the University of Toronto (Canada) in 2008. She received the Campbell MacFarlane award from the South African Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Association in 2010 for her role in combining hyperbaric oxygen therapy into the interprofessional clinical wound care domain. She also received the University of the Free State (RSA) Alumni award in 2014 for advancing the field of nursing on an international level. A life time achievement award from WHASA was awarded in 2018 for her work in advancing wound care in Southern Africa. She is teaching faculty for the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course in Toronto and Abu Dhabi and the mother of two awesome daughters, Jansie and Sally Anne, the biggest gift of her life.

Dieter Mayer (Switzerland)

Dr. Dieter Mayer, MD, FEBVS, FAPWCA, is Assistant Professor for Vascular Surgery with a longstanding interest in wound healing. As Director of Wound Care at the University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, from 2001 to 2016, he established the first dedicated and truly interdisciplinary university wound clinic in Switzerland. From 2016 to 2021 he was Director of Vascular Surgery & Wound Center at the University associated Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg where he successfully introduced a variety of new techniques and clinical studies for skin substitutes in chronic wound patients. He regularly teaches students in vascular surgery and wound healing and is involved in major projects to support wound healing as a specialty of its own. As a wound healer, Doctor Mayer networks throughout the world to support and make a difference in wound healing.
Dr. Mayer is Past Executive Director of the Swiss Association for Wound Care and executive board member of WUWHS 2022 in Abu Dhabi. In 2022, Dr. Mayer decided to fully dedicate his life to the complex field of wound healing. He is now Medical Director of the Kammerlander Wound Academy and of the newly established Embrach Wound Competence Center in Switzerland.

Mariam Botros (Canada)

As CEO of Wounds Canada, Mariam is responsible for both the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the organization. She is a chiropodist and diabetes educator and completed a Master’s in Educational Leadership degree. Mariam has also published, developed and lectured in multiple programs both nationally and internationally in the area of diabetic foot complications and amputation prevention. Through her different roles as an executive director, health-care practitioner and educator, researcher and faculty member for many well-recognized organizations, Mariam has extensive practical and professional experience. As a health leader Mariam is collaborative, creative, empathetic and persistent.

Keith Harding (UK)

Professor Harding has had a longstanding interest in wound healing. He was appointed as the first Director of the Wound Healing Research Unit in 1991. From September 2013 to December 2018 he was Dean of Clinical Innovation at Cardiff University and in 2014 was appointed as Medical Director of the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre. His clinical practice is exclusively focused on treating patients with wound healing problems with a wide range of aetiologies. He holds external professorial appointments at universities in the UK, Australia and Singapore. He has authored over 350 publications in the field of wound healing and has written a number of chapters and books in this area. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Wound Journal. He was awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours list in January 2013 for Services to Medicine and Health Care. In 2013 he was awarded £4.2 million to set up the Welsh Wound Innovation Initiative part of which has enabled the setting up of the first Wound Healing Centre in the World. In 2014 he was awarded The Learned Society of Wales Fellowship. In 2018 he, with others, was awarded a £24 million European grant to establish a Clinical Innovation ecosystem across South Wales. In 2018 he was appointed as a Senior Clinical Research Director at the A Star Institute in Singapore and is part of a SG$28 million wound programme grant.

The programme of research conducted at the Skin Integrity Research Institute (SKINRI) comprises Phase I-IV clinical trials with bedside translation and validation of research findings. She has recently founded the International Surgical Wound Complications Advisory Panel (ISWCAP), a global not for profit organisation to raise awareness of the early identification and prevention of surgical wound complications around the globe. As the founder of ISWACP, she has established a panel of directors that span the Asia-Pacific Rim, Australasia, Canada, Europe, UK, India, Africa and the US to drive change in research and clinical practice in surgical wound healing. Dr Sandy-Hodgetts co-chaired the WUWHS International Consensus document; surgical wound dehiscence improving prevention and outcomes, launched in 2017, as a result of her doctoral research. She has since co-authored two other consensus documents in the surgical wound healing field and has participated as invited expert reviewer for over 4 international clinical guidelines. She has over 20 peer-reviewed publications as first author and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Wound Care and is a regular peer reviewer for BMJ Open, JWC, IWJ. Dr Sandy-Hodgetts was recognised for her contribution to the field of wound healing research in 2018 as the recipient of the Journal of Wound Care Best Clinical Research 2018 Award, an international peer reviewed award as well as second placing for Innovation in Surgical Site Infection 2019. More recently, she has lead the development of the ISWCAP Best Practice Statement on early identification and prevention of surgical wound complications, launched in March 2020 and currently being translated into Spanish and Portuguese.

Terry Swanson (Australia)

Terry Swanson completed her undergraduate nursing studies in the USA before immigrating to Australia in 1988. She was endorsed in 2004 as one of the first Nurse Practitioners in her state and specialty of wound management in Australia. Terry was admitted as a Fellow of the Australian Wound Management Association in 2010 for her significant contribution to wound management at a state, national and international level. She is the current Vice Chair of the International Wound Infection Institute (IWII) and chaired the development and publication of the 2016 IWII Consensus Document Update on Wound Infection. Terry served as the Chair of IWII from 2012 until 2015.
Terry has published and presented on chronic wounds and wound infection nationally and internationally. As co- editor and author, Terry led the team to publish the book Wound Management for the Advanced Practitioner in 2014. Terry was the Scientific Chair of the 2018 Wounds Australia National Conference and has held positions of responsibility of various nursing and wound related boards locally, nationally and internationally.
Kimberly LeBlanc (Canada)

She has completed her MSc in Skin Integrity from University of Hertfordshire (UK) in 2014. Founder and course director of the Ostomy Care and Management (OCM), she has over 20 scientific publications. She has organized the Abu Dhabi Wound Care Conference for the past 13 years. I am Professor of Skin Integrity at the University of Huddersfield, Yorkshire in the UK, Visiting Professor at both Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia and the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin. Additionally, I am elected chair for the International Wound Infection Institute, Vice President of the International Surgical Wounds Complications Advisory Panel and Director (Europe) of the International Skin Tears Advisory Panel. Throughout my career I have maintained an active research interest in skin integrity and infection prevention both in clinical practice and academia that has culminated in the formation of the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention (ISIaIP) for which I am Director. I have dedicated a significant amount of my time to developing and fostering strong international collaborative links with clinical practitioners, academia and industry. My specialist areas of interest include tissue viability, wound management, infection prevention and management of skin tears. Elizabeth Ayello (USA)

Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, MS, BSN, ETN, RN, CWON, MAPWCA, FAAN is a board certified wound and ostomy nurse from New York USA, who is Internationally known as an educator, researcher, clinician, prolific author, editor, and mentor. Dr. Ayello is a Co-Editor in Chief for the journal Advances in Skin and Wound Care, President of Ayello Harris and Associates Inc., President of the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) 2018-2022, Faculty Emerita Excelsior College School of Nursing , Faculty at the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course (IIWCC) in Toronto and Abu Dhabi and Founder/Director of the WoundPedia Basic and Intermediate courses in Manila, the Philippines. A past president of the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and member of the MDRPI working group for the 2019 EPUAP NPIAP PPPIA Pressure Injury International Guideline, Dr. Ayello and has over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, is co-author/co-editor of two wound care books – Wound Care Essentials Practice Principles 5th edition, Pocket Guide to Pressure Ulcers 4th edition, as well as the WCET® International Ostomy Guideline 1st and 2nd editions, and the WCET® Pocket Guides on Ostomy Complications and Stoma Siting.

Sadanori Akita (Japan)

Dr. Akita is a professor and chief of department of plastic surgery, wound repair and regeneration of Fukuoka University, school of medicine since 2016. He did his residency in plastic surgery at Nagasaki University Hospital. He received his PhD from the Graduate School of Nagasaki University specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He later did a research fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under supervision of Shlomo Melmed MD on a cytokine expression and its regulation in vivo by using a transgenic animal model. He serves as a general secretary of World Union of Wound Healing Societies, which will be held in Yokohama, September 2-6, 2012, http://wuwhs2012.com/ and will be president of the world union of wound healing societies, for the years of 2012 to 2016. He is the president of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) from September, 2012 to September, 2016 and currently the president of the Asian Wound Care Association (AWCA). His research interests include: cytokines and stem cells in wound healing, difficult wound healing (radiation injury), regenerative tissue enhancement to HIV-drug related-wasting patients, reconstructive surgery, burn, craniofacial surgery and hemangioma/avascular malformations. Camila Fronzo is Editor at the Latin American edition of the Journal of Wound Care (JWC LATAM) and Head of Projects (PRINCE2 certification) at MA Healthcare, the publisher of JWC. Before joining JWC, she was Content Editor at Whizz Education, an online platform for online learning. She has written for the Financial Times, La Nación and El Cronista Comercial newspapers. From 2011–2014, she was a staff reporter for Apertura magazine in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
